Makro - A Part of its Community
Making a difference in the communities in which it operates is one of the mainstays of Makro. The business aims to not only offer convenience to its customers, but to leave behind a positive imprint when deciding to open a new store.
Makro strives to provide its customers with the best brands, at the most competitive prices and in the most convenient way. Ideally placed for the small business owner with unique shopping requirements, ranging from catering equipment to office stationery, Makro promises to offer the complete package. Makro also provides small businesses ease and convenience through its card system and value added tax (VAT) compliant invoices. “The information gathered through the card system allows Makro to tailor-make special offers for our customers based on their profile and shopping habits,” says Doug Jones, Managing Director of Makro.

The company has gone a step further for small businesses and their retail customers in general. “Our acquisition of FruitSpot in 2011 has positioned Makro as the ultimate warehouse for the small business customer and retail customers. In addition to that, we have made investments into our butchery offering and invested in our own range of ready-cooked meals and baked products”.
Built for Purpose – A New Age Makro Store
Opening a new store is a momentous occasion for Makro, further amplified by the fact that each new store is uniquely designed and built for better customer interface and sustainability. Shares Jones: “For every new store, we endeavour to source building materials and labour locally. In that way we not only promote local economic development, we also contribute to job creation and skills transfer within the communities.” Features of new stores include a thermal storage and a heat exchange system which allow for efficient use of electricity during the day and have the least impact on the communities in which the stores operate. In this respect, introducing natural light in new Makro stores has reduced electricity consumption by about 40% over the past five years.
Building communities to SUCCEED
Makro also keeps an eye on South Africa’s future talent through its SUCCEED initiative which supports Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in partnership with Hope Worldwide. “It’s a well-run programme based on strict principles, that helps ECD care centres to gain accreditation in order to obtain government support. We assist them in every way possible but above all we ensure that each centre we assist is able to sustain itself even after we have left the scene,” says Jones. Jones concludes by urging all retailers to behave in a way that serves the interests of all stakeholders: whether they be customers, suppliers or staff. “As Makro, we execute the privilege we have to serve and help, in a sustainable way, for all stakeholders. We do this because we know we must protect that which we have been given: which is essentially the right to trade.”
